| RA Jay has invited us to start an "oil recommendations" thread here... so if you would like any oil advice or a recommendation for your car please feel free to ask here and we will get back to you as soon as we can. To help us to give the most accurate advice possible we do need some information about your car. e.g. Make: Model: Year: Engine type: Performance modifications: Driving style: (road / off-road / track etc) Any other information that may be relevant: e.g. approx BHP if modified, oil temps if known What recommendation are you looking for? Engine,Gearbox, Diff etc. Any oil we recommend is available to buy from us (if you would like to) for delivery throughout the UK and many destinations in Europe. We stock oils & lubricants from 9 major oil brands: Amsoil, Castrol, Fuchs, Gulf, Millers, Mobil, Motul, Redline and Silkolene, so we can supply fluids meeting the vast majority of manufacturer and international specifications. Dorset Subaru Owners Club members get a discount of at least 10% on our usual prices... just choose "Dorset Subaru Owners Club" as your club when registering on the Opie Oils web site and enter your forum username. Finally, if there are any products we don't stock and you have difficulty getting hold of elsewhere, let us know and we'll see if we can stock them. We look forward to being of help! Cheers Guy, Opie Oils You can also contact us by phone on +44 1209 215164 (All oils recommended are available to buy online at my site) |

Any chance you could elabrate a bit? I thought all car transmission used synchros these days? Also when I rang up a few months ago, you recommended Lightweight shockproof for a 5 speed DCCD box.

For a dogbox the Shockproof is fine, for for the lightweight one.

Sorry, I should have said a bit more. If you were to speak to redline about oil for your standard box they would recommend the Redline Synthetic 75w-90 GL5 as their primary product, they try to keep shockproof range as a "racing" product, thus it comes with no gaurante and its mainly aimed at the synchroless/straightcut/dogbox application, under race use. When they dont recommend the Shockproof for "most" synchro boxes some reading between the lines need to be done. Firstly as the Shockproof oils are API GL5 they can cause shifting issues in boxes where API GL4 is recommended though this is not an issue for the Impreza as it is recommended GL5 for the box. Secondly, Redline would want you to go for the normal 75w-90 GL5 as in Redlines mind that is a road oil. It may sound odd but thats the way Redline see it.
Cheers

| was castrol gtx but engine has been unused for 10-12 years started up twice a year, but oil's have advanced since then. is on restoration prodject which is almost complete. | oilman wrote: | | RA_bly_ wrote: | this nothing to do with subaru ,

For the guaife gears I would go with the Silkolene Syn5 75w-90, the only quaife approved oil.
What oil are you currently using in the engine?

| all oils mix and a 10w-40 is a common grade, so it should be easy enough to get a top up locally |

| The Edge is Castrols top stuff, dont bother with Magnatec or GTX... Its basic stuff.
The 5w-40 should be just fine.
